Ingredients

For the Whipped Spiced Sweet Potato Base
  • 3 lbs sweet potatoes
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 0.33 cup maple syrup
  • 0.33 cup whole milk
  • 1.5 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.5 tsp sea salt
For the Crunchy Candied Pecan Streusel Topping
  • 1.5 cups pecans
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 0.33 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 tbsp cold butter
  • 0.5 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 pinch flaky sea salt

Method

Cook & Whip the Sweet Potatoes
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch or 2-quart artisan baking dish with butter.
  2. Place cooked, peeled sweet potatoes into a large mixing bowl. Add melted butter, pure maple syrup, milk, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and sea salt.
  3. Mash or whip with an electric hand mixer for 2 minutes until luxuriously smooth, airy, and uniform. Spread evenly into prepared baking dish.
Craft the Candied Pecan Streusel
  1. In a separate bowl, whisk together chopped pecans, brown sugar, all-purpose flour, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon.
  2. Add cold cubed butter. Use your fingertips or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the dry ingredients until crumbly clumps form and pecans are thoroughly coated.
Bake to Golden Fragrance
  1. Scatter the pecan streusel evenly over the whipped sweet potato puree, pressing gently into the surface.
  2. Bake uncovered for 30 to 35 minutes until the sweet potato filling is piping hot and bubbling around the edges, and the pecan streusel turns deep golden-brown and toasty fragrant. Rest 10 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

PRO TIP: Baking the sweet potatoes whole in their jackets rather than boiling concentrates their natural sugars and prevents excess water from making the puree loose.
